Wild West Showman and American Myth-Maker.
William F. Cody—better known as Buffalo Bill—lived the frontier before he sold it as entertainment. He scouted for the Army, hunted buffalo by the hundreds, and built the Wild West into a brand long before Hollywood figured it out. He was equal parts cowboy and capitalist.
He honored Native Americans in his shows (by 19th-century standards), gave Annie Oakley her stage, and never forgot where he came from. Some called him a sellout—but he preserved stories when no one else would.
